Dong Bang Shin Ki, or DBSK, or Tohoshinki, or Tong Vfang Xien Qi, or TVXQ, or… any more? How many name versions could a band have? Well for sanity’s sake, let’s stick with DBSK. And lucky for them, too many names hasn’t lost them and/or confused any fans; say either name to a teenage girl and you’re sure to get a scream and maybe some swooning!
DBSK, a South Korean boy band formed under SM Entertainment in 2003, has become one of the most popular singing groups in East/South-East Asia, so much that in 2005, they were introduced to Japan under music management giant Avex Trax. With a name that roughly translates to “Rising Gods of the East”, its no wonder why these 5 boys have garnered so much attention and fame across the continent.
As per the typical structure of a boyband, DBSK are known for their funky, fast sexy dance numbers as much as their love ballads. The group’s five members: Xiah Junsu, Micky Yuchun, Hero Jaejoong, Max Changmin, U-know Yunho work collectively as DBSK and are also known for their own solo projects in both music, commercial and television.
Ask any DBSK fan what they are anticipating this year and you’ll definitely hear the word “Mirotic”! After 3 Korean albums, DBSK had temporarily moved to Japan, under Avex Trax, to increase their market, and a 2 year wait for the much anticipated 4th studio album, “Mirotic” saw pre-orders and sales rocket through the roof at the band’s return to their Korean roots. "MIROTIC" is a newly coined term that combines the Korean “miro” meaning "maze", and the English suffix "-tic".
The result: Mirotic is currently the best-selling album of 2008 in Korea. Looks like DBSK will be around for a while.
